Bicycle Safety

In Marin County, the use of electric bicycles (e-bikes) for active transportation and recreation is increasing. This trend has been accompanied by an increase in e-bike related accidents. This dashboard describes all 911 responses by Marin County Emergency Medical Services to e-bike and conventional bike accidents county-wide. The data highlights trends and can guide e-bike safety measures in our community. The dashboard includes interactive elements to select specific date ranges, or filter results by type of bike. Data will be updated weekly.

Bicycle Accident Overview

How to use this dashboard:

  • Adjust Date of Accident Slider to view time period of interest.
  • In the Bicycle Type panel, select Conventional Bike to filter for non-electric pedal bicycles or select E-Bike to filter for electric-powered bicycles. Select All to view both bicycle types.

 

Bicycle Accident By Age Category

The following dashboard describes the frequency and nature of bike accidents by age categories. Bicycle accident data collection began in October 2023; as such, the accident rate reflects the cumulative total of incidents relative to the population.

Definitions included in this dashboard

  • Frequency of Accident: the total number of 911 responses to bike accidents from October 2023 to present day.
  • Accident Rate (per 100,000): the total number of bike accidents per 100,000 people in the given age category population from October 2023 to present day.
  • Nature of Accident: a field that describes whether the accident was traffic related (e.g. collision with vehicle) or non-traffic related.
