Primary prevention services are designed to foster safe and healthy environments for individuals, families and the greater community, positively affect community norms and attitudes, and increase awareness and knowledge about alcohol and other drugs thereby influencing incidence and prevalence of problems within the community.

Screening and Assessment

Screening and Brief Intervention, along with Referral to Treatment is a comprehensive, integrated, public health approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment services for persons with substance use disorders, and those who are at risk of developing these disorders.


Treatment programs in Marin offer services ranging from DUI programs, screening and assessment, detoxification, individual/family counseling, adolescent services, outpatient, intensive outpatient, residential (short/long term), perinatal services, medication assisted therapies, and narcotic replacement therapies. Any pregnant woman who seeks or is referred for and would benefit from services are given preference in admissions to treatment facilities.

Therapeutic Justice Programs

Recovery Connections Center
The Recovery Connections Center offers a variety of services, including Engagement and Retention groups, and consultation and care management services to the mental health and social services systems of care. Bay Area Community Resources’ Recovery Connections Center also provides in-custody substance use assessments and Parole-referred bracelet evaluations.  For all other substance use assessment and referral services, contact Behavioral Health Access and Assessment at 1-888-818-1115.

Mental Health and Substance Use Services (MHSUS) changed its name to Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS).  As such, all references in existing departmental policies and procedures to MHSUS can be understood to reference BHRS as well.
