Every year, millions of older adults across the nation are targeted by financial scams and fraud. It can happen to anyone, even those without substantial incomes or assets.
Protect Yourself from Scams
- Educate yourself about different types of scams, including those reported in your local area.
- Be wary of unsolicited offers and products.
- Do not let pressure or threats coerce you into sharing your sensitive information.
- Never share your credit card details, banking information, PIN numbers, Social Security or Medicare card numbers, or other personal information unless you are certain the person has a legitimate need for it.
Reporting Scams
- to your local police or sheriff's office business number (not 9-1-1),
- to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3),
- to your bank and/or credit card company (if money has been taken from your accounts),
- or Adult Protective Services at (415) 473-2774.
